Police say that at approximately 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 12, officers from the department were called to the 1200 block of West Patrick Street, where they found a man in the roadway after being struck by the truck.

The man - who has still not been identified by investigators - was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to investigators, it has been determined that a 2014 Mack garbage truck registered to BFI Waste Services in Hagerstown, was leaving a shopping center when the driver made a right turn onto West Patrick Street when it struck the person in the wheelchair as he was crossing the road at the entrance of the shopping center.

Officials noted that the driver of the truck remained at the scene and is cooperating with the department.

The Crash Reconstruction Team is still investigating the crash. Anyone with information regarding the incident has been asked to contact Officer Coady by calling (240) 549-4542 or emailing acoady@frederickmdpolice.org.

More information is expected to be released as the investigation continues.
